Durga Puja 2026
Lord Rama worshiped Goddess Durga for victory in his battle against the demon king Ravana. Today that ancient autumn ritual has grown into Bengal's biggest festival — Durga Puja, celebrated as the homecoming of the Goddess with her four children.
This extravagant and amazing cultural carnival is celebrated in spectacular fashion throughout Bengal. Once hosted exclusively in the mansions of wealthy merchants, this extravagant Bengal carnival has transformed into a spectacular open-air art gallery.
Today, it showcases months of creative effort, offering a grand fusion of devotion, stunning installations, endless feasting, and vibrant celebration.
UNESCO recognised this 5-day festival as the best example of "the public performance of religion and art."
The festivity starts even before the actual rituals do.

The 7-Day Itinerary
Arrive in Kolkata with a warm airport meet-and-greet. After check-in and lunch, visit Kumartuli, the clay idol makers hub, to see sculptors shaping the idols. Enjoy a city tour experiencing the festive preparations, interact with local artists, and soak in the bustling shopping atmosphere. Your evening includes a traditional henna application to get you festive-ready.
During the festival, Kolkata transforms as it fills with beautiful temporary structures known as pandals. Each day, we will explore a different neighbourhood to experience this creative brilliance, starting today in South Kolkata. Enjoy a home-cooked lunch, chat with a local family to learn how they prepare for the festival, and then take in more festivities before returning to the hotel by evening.
Early this morning, we head down to the riverbanks. The Ganges is our holy river, and no ceremony can proceed without her blessings. At the ghat, we observe the highly auspicious Nabapatrika snan ritual — the symbolic welcoming of the goddess in the form of vegetation to invoke fertility and prosperity for all.
Afterward, we return to the hotel for breakfast. Discover the roots of Kolkata's grand festival by visiting the heritage homes of North Kolkata, where wealthy merchant families first began the tradition of worship. You will join these families in their ancestral houses to participate in private rituals, followed by a special, tradition-infused festive lunch. Afterward, head out to marvel at the city's most creative and magnificent public pandals, which take months of dedication to build.
Today, we step off the beaten path to immerse ourselves in a culturally rich, heritage-dipped festival. We drive to a magnificent 250-year-old colonial estate, where participating in traditional rituals offers an authentic glimpse into centuries-old Zamindari (Land lordship) life. Later, enjoy delicious, farm-to-table home cooking, personally supervised by the lady of the house with exceptional care and grace.
Following breakfast, we drive to Azimganj — once the historic hub of powerful Jain business dynasties. Your accommodation is an elegant merchant palace where you will join the family in sacred rituals rather than merely observing. As night falls, enjoy lively cultural performances in the main courtyard.
The festival concludes with married women applying sindoor (vermilion) to each other, praying for their families' wellbeing and prosperity.
The celebrations end with a village walk to the river to immerse the idols, accompanied by heartfelt prayers for the Goddess to return and bless them again next year.
After breakfast, enjoy the drive back to Kolkata, departing for your next destination with unforgettable memories.
